Move2Green turns one: A look at the key highlights
Move2Green, Kalmar’s ambitious five-year R&D program and ecosystem, was launched at the end of March 2025. It secured €20 million in funding from Business Finland, which complements Kalmar’s own €50 million investment. As the program has completed its first year of the program, let’s review some of the key highlights.
“The Move2Green program has energized our R&D efforts and we aim to gain even more momentum as the program advances. This will reinforce Kalmar’s position as a technology leader and secures the future success of both Kalmar and our ecosystem partners,” says Jukka Borgman, Director, Technology and Research, Kalmar.
Move2Green drives innovation across three key themes with ecosystem.
Building a strong ecosystem
A strong ecosystem is vital for achieving Move2Green’s ambitious vision: enabling net-zero heavy industrial logistics chains by 2045. We aim to establish an ecosystem of 150 partners. This effort is supported by significant funding potential: ecosystem partners can access up to €50 million from Business Finland, provided they match that amount with their own €50 million investment.
“The Move2Green program has attracted significant interest. Our ecosystem already includes 68 companies and research organizations. While the program’s year one focused on internal projects and launching the program, year two will see us leverage our ecosystem more strongly and launch new ecosystem projects. We will be focusing on expanding the ecosystem, strengthening communication, introducing new forms of collaboration, and advancing funding for ecosystem projects,” says Susanna Kiijärvi, who leads the Move2Green ecosystem at Kalmar.
A major highlight of the first year was the launch event at Kalmar’s Innovation Center in Tampere, Finland, which brought together more than 100 partners. (Read about the launch event). The Move2Green team also completed a university tour across Finland to introduce the program and discuss future collaboration opportunities.
Kalmar’s President and CEO, Sami Niiranen, and Jukka Borgman, Kalmar’s Director, Technology and Research, opened the day.
Over 20 internal R&D projects driving the future
“We launched over 20 internal R&D projects during the first year, focusing on bold new research and development. While these projects might not generate sales this year or next, they are crucial for future growth. Thanks to Business Finland’s funding, we can look further and take more risks,” says Linnea Harala, Move2Green Program Manager at Kalmar.
Growing the team
Establishing a program of this size requires extensive cooperation and coordination. To lead these efforts, Linnea Harala and Susanna Kiijärvi joined Kalmar in February 2026. Linnea manages the program internally and the Business Finland partnership, while Susanna focuses on building a powerful Move2Green ecosystem.
We were also pleased to announce the leaders for three core themes:
- Mikko Nurmela and Sami Yli-Äyhö for Electrification & Energy Storage
- Tomi Krogerus and Lari Melander for Data-Driven Services & Processes
- Oskari Koskela and Tia Jysmä for Responsibility
Spreading the word
During the first year, we introduced the program both internally and externally. The Move2Green team held many productive discussions with various stakeholders. In addition, we launched the Move2Green webpage and published several articles and LinkedIn posts to keep our partners informed.
